What To Do About Menopausal Night Sweats

Every woman experiences menopause in her unique way. You may have a different set of symptoms than your friends, sisters, and aunts do. You may not have symptoms at all.

But if you suffer from night sweats, you probably also experience the aftereffects of poor sleep, including brain fog and weight gain.

Cool down

When our ancestors slept in caves or other shelters, the night air kept their bodies cool. You can help your body sleep more restfully if the temperature in your bedroom mimics that of a naturally cool night. Turn down the temperature to somewhere between 65-70 degrees to minimize your risk for night sweats. 

Some mattresses, including memory foam mattresses, trap your body heat, which might make you more liable to sweat. Either switch your mattress or use a mattress topper that keeps you cool with heat-absorbing gel or circulating water. 

Take a cold or warm shower or bath before bedtime to lower your body temperature, too.

Sleep in the nude or in a light, natural fabric, such as silk or bamboo, to stay cool as you dream. Synthetic fabrics trap the heat. Keep a robe nearby in case you have to venture out into the chilly air for a bathroom break.

Eat and drink for nourishment

If you’re in the habit of eating and drinking for enjoyment alone, you could be turning up your body’s thermostat. Choose foods and beverages that support your body’s functions, instead of working against them. 

That means plenty of fresh, whole vegetables and fruits, high-quality protein, and high-quality, healthy fats. Dr. Smith can help you make better choices.

Avoid too much caffeine, especially close to bedtime. Find a healthier substitute for that evening glass of red wine or nightcap. Alcohol raises your body temperature, as do spicy foods.

If you smoke or use recreational drugs, now's the time to kick those habits, too. Dr. Smith can refer you to a specialist or a cessation program.

Balance your hormones

When your body shifts from fertility to menopause, it gradually stops producing the hormones that cause you to ripen and release eggs from your ovaries.

In other words, low levels of estrogen don’t just make you look and feel different, they compromise your health, including your sexual health.
